ABOUT ROYALSTEEZ: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Artist statement 2013
ROYALSTEEZ (Amsterdam, 1972) is a contemporary artist fascinated with norms and values in today's society. His work sets out to challenge controversial subjects in a tongue-in-cheek manner. In 2009, at De Wereld van Witte de With in Rotterdam, he attempted to apologise to a well-known supermarket giant by spelling out the word “SORRY” in a careful construction of the store's shopping baskets he had “borrowed” from his local branch over the years. During the opening he was arrested on charges of theft of the 100+ baskets that made up the artwork. Though the work was never exhibited because of the legal action taken, heavy press coverage ensued and prompted a public debate about art and its boundaries. ROYALSTEEZ will experiment with any medium that seems appropriate for the subject—after all, the creative concept is key. The range and diversity in his provocative work has led to him being a frequent and avid participator of national as well as international art manifestos.
