ABOUT ROYALSTEEZ: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROYALSTEEZ is a contemporary artist from Amsterdam. His work is often
described as "superficial" and "childish" but it is also described as "politically "committed" and "anarchistic". His work 'For the Love of Candy " was based
on the English artist Damien Hirst's work "For the Love of God". But instead
of diamonds, he covered the skull with yellow handmade sweets (passion-fruit flavor). This was a light-hearted way of ridiculing one of the world's most expensive artworks and making fun of the established art world. It resulted in him being invited to various national and international art fairs.
He also did this with his work for the German art project "Farbwerte" where he used pinbuttons to form the word "gemütlich" in the colors of the German flag, this was treading on thin ice!
In 2009 he was nominated for the "Frans Verlinden Art Prize 2009" for his work "inbetween stations”. - A photo of a subway station.
His most famous work is "SORRY" for the art festival "World of Witte de With” 2009. The theme for that year was 'limits' . He collected shopping baskets from a well-known supermarket for a year long. He wanted to offer his excuses by building the word 'SORRY' with the baskets that he had taken. He was arrested at the festival and charged with the theft and embezzlement of more than 100 shopping baskets. The entire project was widely reported in the press and led to much discussion.
ROYALSTEEZ is able to create a message that is often laden, in a humorous way by using his clear imagery. His works come in various guises, and he does not hesitate using any medium. Multi-facetted, but always clearly a ROYALSTEEZ.
